Supernatural Inside the Legend - Hell House

What is a Hell House?

Commonly called a judgment home, a hell house is a haunted-house usually run by Christian churches or parachurch groups. These houses reveal the torments of Hell to the unsaved who haven't repented of their sins. These houses focuses on effects of sin and try to give people an idea of what eternity will be like if you don't turn your life over to Christ. These houses typically feature exhibits depicting certain types of sin such as: abortion, homosexuality, suicide, alcohol use, drugs, adultery, pre-marital sex, occultism, and satanic ritual abuse.

The first Hell House was created by Jerry Falwell in the late 1970's. Since then many pastors at local churches have put together hell house ministries and provide the supplies to put on their own attractions in their communities. Hell Houses are usually performed during the Halloween season.

Winchester Mystery House

One of the most famous haunted houses in history is the Winchester Mystery Home. What a coincidence, “Winchester Home”. Perhaps some of plot of Supernatural came from this haunted house legend. The legend dates back to September 1839 in New Haven , Connecticut , with the birth of Sarah Pardee. She was well admired woman who was known for musical skills, foreign languages, and astounding charm.

At this same time, another young man named William Wirt Winchester was born in New Haven . His parents prospered above and beyond what they could've ever dreamed about by taking over the assets of a firm in 1857. On September 30 th , 1862 William and Sarah got married. Four years later in July of 1866, they gave birth to their daughter Annie. Just days after her birth, she was struck with an illness known as “marasmus”, a disease in which the body wastes away. Little Annie passed away 9 days later on July 24. Her death just tore the family apart. A decade later, the second disaster occurred when William died from pulmonary tuberculosis. However, Sarah did inherit over $20 million dollars.

Sarah was just completely torn apart after all that had just happened. She went to see a spiritualist medium for advice. The medium told her that a curse has been placed upon her family and that it will soon take her own life. She was told to sell her house and move out west and to follow the commands of William's spirit. She purchased a mansion out in San Diego . Immediately after buying the property, she destroyed every construction plan on the house and started from scratch. For years, she construction teams keep building and adding on to the house as she saw fit. The house eventually grew to over 7 stories high. Sarah also seemed to be intrigued by the number 13. Nearly every design in the house had something to do with the 13. The house only contained 2 mirrors. Sarah believed that the ghosts were afraid of their own reflection and her goal was to trap the spirits inside the house. Sarah died at the age of 83 in September of 1922.

In the years after her death, the legend says the ghost of Sarah Winchester haunts the house in search of revenge. Rumor has it that somewhere in the house was a hidden safe containing a fortune in jewelry. The house is now a California Historical Landmark.

Myrtles Plantation

The Myrtles Plantation is a bed-and-breakfast inn located in St, Francisville , Louisiana . The house was built over 200 years ago, said to have been built on Tunica Indian burial mounds. The house was owned by Judge Clark Woodruffe and his wife Sarah. They owned a slave named Chloe. Eventually the judge got tired of her and caught her eavesdropping on one of his conversations. He cut off her ear as a punishment. In revenge, Chloe decide to poison his two daughters by putting lethal ingredients in their birthday cake. Unfortunately Sara also died from the poison. Chloe was hung to death for her wicked actions and her corpse was thrown in the river nearby.

Legend says that Chloe's ghost haunts the house in search of revenge against the judge. In the days following her death, strange sounds and sightings were reported on the plantation. The grand piano would be playing by itself, blood filled in the pool, apparitions of two little blonde girls, and a Voodoo preistress spirit was seen once in a while in the form of a young girl.

Carolands Mansion

Fresh off of www.hellhoundslair.com the website mentioned in the “Hell House” episode, this is what they have to say on the subject of the haunted house.

"In my hometown of Hillsborough , CA there is a place called Carolands Mansion . It's an abandoned huge mansion that had apparently been the first house ever built in the city. When I was in high school I heard a story that a couple of years before two girls had wanted to go inside and look at the mansion. The security guard that kept an eye on the abandoned mansion agreed to take them on a tour. He took them to a room that used to be a vault. Once inside he raped and murdered the two women. It's said that the spirits of the two girls still inhabit the vault." - Lucy , CA

"Have you guys ever heard of the Whaley House in Old Town , San Diego ? It's apparently the most haunted house in the United States . I went there when I was little and was super creeped out." - Ben , CA

"In my town of Anaheim Hills, CA on a street called Mohler, there's this house that's completely enclosed by vines and is always dark and has old cars that haven't been touched and a random sheep that's still alive. It's been for sale for years and no one sees anyone come in or out of the house." - Heather, CA

"In Richardson , Texas there's a legend that a spirit haunts a local haunted house. Apparently it attacks girls, strings them up in the rafters and then the bodies mysteriously disappear. Some kids I know saw a body hanging in the cellar of that haunted house." - Richard , TX

"There's a hotel in Maribel , Wisconsin , 5 miles from where I'm from. This hotel burned three times each on the same date. On some nights you can still see the image of a young child in the upper windows who supposedly died in one of the fires!! They say this hotel is the portal to hell, hence the name 'Hotel Hell'. There's also another story that there are some natural springs under the hotel that are claimed to be the fountain of youth." - Chris , WI

Tulpas

A tulpa is a being or object which is created through sheer willpower alone. In other words, tulpas are spirits that exist because of certain beliefs among people. It's a thought or idea in physical form. If you recall back to the X-Files in the Arcadia episode in the 6 th season, the president of the homeowners' association for an exclusive community, use a tulpa to enforce the neighborhood rules.
